Bridge Collapse

Reported via desktop in the Water Flowing on to the Road category anonymously at 10:51, Tuesday 3 February 2026

Sent to Aberdeenshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 949897.

There is a blockage under the bridge/tunnel causing water to back up, flow through a dry stone wall and up through a drain onto the road. This then flows down the hill eventually to South Deeside, it is exacerbated by blocked drains further down. I took the second image in Oct 2023 showing the masonry displaced under the road/bridge in the tunnel. There is v little water coming out the other (downstream) side of te bridge suggesting this situation under the road has worsened. [The drains on the same road up by Auchlunies are all clear, many thanks]. If you need any further information please contact me.

Updates

  • We’ve had a look at the issue and have now passed your enquiry to our local Roads Team for assessment. They’ll determine what action is needed and we’ll update you once that assessment has taken place.

  • Thank you for your report. We’ve arranged for an inspection to take place so we can confirm who is responsible for the issue you’ve raised.

This may involve checking whether the defect relates to the public road network or to infrastructure maintained by another council service, a utility company or other private party.

We’ll update you once the inspection is complete and we know how the matter will be progressed.

    State changed to: Action scheduled

  • We’ve completed our inspection and identified that the issue relates to an obstruction or defect for which a private party is responsible, under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.

The Roads Authority is taking appropriate action to resolve the matter. This may include requiring the responsible individual or organisation to carry out remedial work within a specified timescale.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation and take further steps if necessary to ensure compliance.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

    State changed to: Planned

  • Many thanks for your response. I struggle to understand how this issue can be a private land owner’s problem. I have cleaned the drains and the upstream side of the bridge many times and it is clear that the issue is that the bridge or tunnel cannot take the capacity of water from the dyke. This is exacerbated by the collapsing masonry inside the tunnel under the road which is shown in the image I sent you. The image you sent in your report is of a surface drain on the other side of the road/bridge which is not related to the issue I am reporting. Many thanks.

  • Picture of tunnel under the road and masonry collapsing. As previously stated this was back in 2023 so may now be worse.

  • The water is now bubbling up in the middle of the road having broken through from under the bridge. It is now a significant hazard combined with the increased traffic with S Deeside Road closed. Flooding down the road is causing further deterioration of the road. Many thanks.
