Overgrown verge Cuminestown

Sent to Aberdeenshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 916998.

A member of the public have brought to our attention that there is an overgrown verge just outside Cuminestown (junction of Auchry Road and B9170) where the vegetation is so high that it is impossible to see the oncoming traffic when trying to turn right or go straight. The section just next to the road have been trimmed back, but unfortunately, the vegetation on the private property directly next to the road has been allowed to grow out. We have been told by our local councillor (Cllr Stirling), that you would be able to speak with the owner of the property to recommend that the vegetation be cut back. Neighbours have directly requested that the property owner cut this vegetation, but they have been refused. There are reports that the property owner has expressed the view that keeping the visibility limited helps slow traffic… There have been multiple collisions, and regular near-collisions at this crossroad recently, and we are very worried there will soon be a death.

    We’ve completed our inspection and identified that the issue relates to an obstruction or defect for which a private party is responsible, under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.

    The Roads Authority is taking appropriate action to resolve the matter. This may include requiring the responsible individual or organisation to carry out remedial work within a specified timescale.

    We’ll continue to monitor the situation and take further steps if necessary to ensure compliance.
