Metal service cover on A92 footpath gave way when stepped on

Reported via mobile in the Manhole Cover category anonymously at 17:13, Saturday 3 October 2026

Sent to Aberdeenshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 985321.

I stepped onto this metal service cover on the footpath alongside the A92 at Johnshaven today (3 October), heading northbound on the pavement. The cover tipped/gave way beneath me, causing me to fall. I injured my knee and hand and my glasses were broken in the fall. I narrowly avoided falling into the A92. The footpath is narrow here and the cover looked completely normal, so I stepped on it. It tipped as soon as I put my weight on it and I fell, injuring my knee and hand and breaking my glasses. I was very lucky I didn’t fall into the A92. My elderly mother-in-law was walking just behind me, so thankfully I was in front.

Location: between the two entrances to Johnshaven, New Road and Castle Street, closer to Castle Street and diagonally across from the farm/cottages. Rough What3Words location: ///twisting.call.relies
